2012 Primary Technology Day Camp
Grades 1 and 2
Where/When:
July 9-12, 2012 - Monday thru Thursday from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon. This session of camp will be held tentatively at Broad Ford Elementary School in Oakland, Maryland.
July 16-19, 2012 - Monday thru Thursday from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. This session of camp will be held at the Garrett Engineering and Robotics Society (GEARS) Building in Accident, Maryland.
We will conclude the camp Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m. with the Parent Program where students will present their simple machine projects and slide shows.
Cost:
Tuition is $85.00 per student.
Who:
The Primary Technology Day Camp is open to any student currently in first or second grade. A total of 20 students will be selected on a first come, first served basis as applications are received. A minimum of two teachers will be involved in the instruction and direction of the camp’s activities. We would also like to encourage you to consider being a parent volunteer for the week to work with the students as they build their projects.
What:
The camp offers students the opportunity to learn as they build models that are examples of simple machines in the real world. Participants will gain experience in applying technology as a tool in a variety of activities such as:
• Lego Dacta: Lego Dacta is the educational division of Lego. We will use the Simple Machines Mini Sets to build simple machines to perform specific tasks. Lego Dacta activities provide experience in visual and logical reasoning, math and science applications, and problem solving. We will do extension activities with Lego Motorized Simple Machines Sets for students who attended last year’s camp.
• Simple Machines CD Rom: Participants will be guided through real world examples of how simple machines make work easier.
• Multimedia Projects: Multimedia involves using computers to bring digital pictures, and sound together to communicate ideas. Students will create multimedia products which describe their camp experience using Kid Pix software and a digital camera.
• Technology Show: All activities will be “hands-on” and the week will culminate Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m. with the students Technology Show for families and friends.
How:
•Students wishing to attend must apply using the application provided below.
•Complete the application form and sign the permission statement. Applications will be accepted through June 22, 2012. Participants will be accepted on a first come-first served basis.
•Make your check for $85.00 payable to the Garrett County Board of Education.
•Submit your check, the completed application form and permission statement by June 22, 2012 to the address at the bottom of the form.
